Here is a photo of the next piece from the Beauty and the Brain Series still in progress on my working wall in my studio. It should be completed this week, and is set to go to Dr. Joung Lee, a neurosurgeon in Cleveland Ohio. This piece will also be the subject of an art documentary that will air on News 10 about my work. I will keep you posted as to the air date and time, and try to post a link to the video here too.

Making Art from the Sarcoma Experience…
My dear husband, Scott, has been battling skull base Chondrosarcoma for 5 years now. It has been a difficult struggle for him, for me as his wife, and for our three children. I felt compelled to build something positive out of this situation, so I did what I do best – I made art. As a way to honor select US Neurosurgeons, I have started a series of large, bright collage paintings called Beauty and the Brain. I select top-notch US neurosurgeons from nominations made by patients, caregivers, staff and other sources, and I give the paintings to these neurosurgeons as a gift of appreciation for their skill, compassion, and caring demeanor. The first in the series went to Dr Cully Cobb in Sacramento, CA – my husband’s neurosurgeon. The second was awarded to Dr Ossama Al-Mefty of the University of Arkansas Medical Center. He is known internationally for his pioneering surgical approach to previously “inoperable” tumors. The third painting in the Series went to Dr Chandranath Sen of St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. It is a great blessing for me to be able to use my creative talent in this way. The doctors are quite surprised when they receive my letter telling them about the project, and that they will be receiving one of my paintings as a gift. I have not met any of them, except, of course for my husband’s doctor. One neurosurgeon wrote me a heartfelt thank you note, but really the thank you goes to the doctors, and the paintings are really from their patients, not from me. You see it is their patients who are appreciative of the doctors’ skill, expertise and care.

Today I'm just beginning to work on a new piece from the Beauty and the Brain Series that will be a gift to a neurosurgeon in Oregon. I will post photos of the piece as it progresses.

Presented to Dr. Chandranath Sen of St Luke's - Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. Dr. Sen was nominated to receive this "painting award" by many of his patients and by several members of his staff. Clearly, he is well respected and appreciated in the field of neurosurgery.

OF NEUROSURGERY AND BRAIN TUMORS
BY MAKING “NEURO-ART” FOR AMERICAN NEUROSURGEONS

The Series Of Works
Titled, “Beauty and The Brain”
Is A Way To Honor Top Doctors.

Sacramento mixed media artist, Eileen Downes has begun an art endeavor aimed at honoring top United States Neurosurgeons as well as increasing public awareness of the dynamic strides made in the field of neurosurgery as a treatment for brain tumors. The artist is passionate about this subject matter as her husband battles brain cancer. The art series juxtaposes scientific illustration of the brain with oversized florals composed of colorful collage material. The painted images are bright, vivid, and large all being 30” square canvases. (see attached photos) “I intend to award select US neurosurgeons the artworks as my way of recognizing experts in this progressive field,” states Ms. Downes. With input from other sources such as brain tumor support groups, patient advocate groups, neurosurgery patient referral networks, and internet neurology advice centers the artist presents select US neurosurgeons one original painting from the Beauty And The Brain series, completing about two paintings per year. The first of the series was presented to Sacramento’s own top doc, Dr. Cully Cobb III, MD. (see attached photo of art presentation). In 2003 Sacramento Magazine recognized Dr Cobb as a top Neurosurgeon and expert in his field. The artist reflects upon Dr Cobb as, “Your top-notch knowledge, caring demeanor, and expert skill have inspired me to create a series of artworks embracing the concept of the “brain” and “neurosurgery.” Another of her paintings was awarded to Dr. Ossama Al-Mefty of Little Rock, Arkansas. He is known for his innovative approach to craniotomy surgeries. The artist is excited to continue this on going art endeavor.
